How to Enjoy the Fair on a Budget
by Emily Cain
Who doesn’t love a good fair? Whether your 5 or 65, there’s always something to love about the fair. For some, it’s receiving a ribbon after months of hard work and dedication, for others it’s the endless variety of deep-fried calories lined as far as the eye can see. Whatever it is, it usually comes with a price, but taking your family to the fair doesn’t have to empty your pockets. Here are a few tips on how to enjoy the fair on a budget:
1. Take advantage of opening day free admission or pick up discounted tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased 6 for $25 during regular business hours from the fair office and at all Lancaster Fairfield National Bank locations.
2. Plan before you go! Planning your activities before you go will help to keep unnecessary spending to a minimum. Pick up a fair schedule or view it online at http://www.fairfieldcountyfair.org/fair-program. Know how much each activity costs and leave the extra at home.
3. Be prepared. If you’re planning a long day out you need to stay hydrated and the cost of beverages can really add up. Pack a small cooler and leave it in the car, this is a great place to take a break from the crowds and relax.
4. Never go hungry! Just like the grocery store, the fair is another place you never want to go when you’re hungry. Here, both cost and calories add up fast. If you are one that lives for food, limit your food intake to just your favorite vendors. Consider walking the entire midway to ensure you are getting the best price.
5. Free shows. ‘Special Events’ often require special prices. Rather than spend an additional admission, take time to enjoy some non-traditional free shows, experience the variety of exhibits offered in the art hall and animal barns, or consider sitting outside general admission seating.
6. Slow down and take time to make memories. Explore the historic buildings, mingle with vendors from throughout the community, meet some new neighbors and enjoy their exhibits that are on display throughout the grounds.
